Measure the roof's horizontal projection
This roof area calculator converts a rectangular horizontal roof footprint into sloping surface area. Enter the roof's projected length and width in feet, then its pitch. Think of the footprint as the outline viewed straight from above, with the sloping surfaces flattened onto a horizontal plane without stretching the outline.
Include the overhangs in that outline. Measurements between exterior walls alone leave out roof coverage beyond the walls. Do not substitute the house's living area: upper floors can increase advertised square footage without increasing the roof footprint. A roof plan or measured exterior projection is the useful starting point.
See how pitch increases surface area
A projected roof measuring 40 feet by 30 feet covers 1,200 square feet horizontally. At 4:12, its sloping surface area is about 1,264.91 square feet. The change comes from following the roof's diagonal surface instead of the shorter horizontal distance underneath it.
The calculation multiplies the projected area by the slope multiplier derived from pitch. Equivalently, it divides the projected area by the cosine of the roof angle. The calculator uses the unrounded pitch calculation internally; displayed values are shortened only to make them easier to read.
Count each part of the roof once
For a simple gable with matching pitches, use the complete rectangular projection across the whole roof. You do not need to double the result for its opposing slopes. Both slopes are already represented by the complete footprint, and each part receives the same pitch adjustment.
A hip roof can also use this approach when its planes share the same pitch and the projected outline is measured correctly. An irregular outline needs separate nonoverlapping sections. Break the plan into useful pieces and keep a sketch showing which area belongs to each calculation, especially around attached garages and intersecting roofs.
Keep unlike measurements separate
A porch or dormer with a different pitch needs its own area calculation. Do not average the slopes or apply the main roof's pitch to every addition. If you already measured the actual sloping surface, do not feed those sloped dimensions into this footprint calculator; that would apply the slope adjustment again.
The result is surface area, not a finished material order. Keep waste, starter shingles, ridge caps, flashing, and other accessories separate. For a complex roof, compare the section-by-section calculation with a roof plan or contractor measurement before using it to purchase material.
